Cabo de Palos lighthouse in Costa Cálida

In 1554, due to the intensity of the attacks of the Barbary pirates on the entire Spanish Mediterranean coast, King Charles I orders the council of Cartagena to build on the promontory of a lookout tower with the name of Torre de San Antonio.

It was in the time of Philip II when a complete system of defense of the coasts was undertaken, whose most direct leaders were Vespasian I Gonzaga and the prestigious Italian engineer Juan Bautista Antonelli, who, during the summer of 1570, Coast of the kingdom of Murcia and planned a complete defensive system of the Spanish coast.

As a consequence of this plan of defense, in 1578 the tower was completed, which was hexagonal in shape, and it was ordered to place guards whose mission consisted in sighting as soon as possible and giving notice of the presence of enemy whips, galleys and arrows.
