Get to know the area of Elche
The city of Elche has a population of around 228,000 people. It is famous for having a palm grove that is considered the largest in Europe. The town itself was founded by the Moors, who planted the first palm grove plantations.
The irrigation systems they developed are still widely in use today. In the 18th century, the palm grove had more than 200,000 trees. UNESCO also made the area a World Heritage Site in 2000. Today the palm trees are protected by law and are constantly being defended against the red palm weevil.
